Understanding error code E115.

Oven temperature exceeded safe limit — overheat protection triggered

What E115 means on your Bosch range

Error code E115 is a critical safety code indicating that the oven cavity temperature has exceeded the maximum safe operating limit. The control board has detected a temperature above the upper threshold — which can vary by cycle type but is typically above 550°F (288°C) during normal baking or above the self-clean maximum. The board immediately cuts power to the heating elements and locks the oven door until the temperature drops to a safe level.

Symptoms

  • The oven shuts off unexpectedly during operation
  • The oven door locks and won’t open
  • E115 displayed on the control panel
  • A burning smell or smoke from the oven (in severe cases)

Common causes

  • Faulty temperature sensor — the sensor reads lower than actual temperature, causing the board to keep the elements on until true temperature overshoots
  • Stuck relay on control board — the relay that controls the bake or broil element gets welded shut, keeping the element on regardless of the board’s signal
  • Cooling fan failure — the cooling fan that ventilates the oven compartment stops working, allowing heat to build up around the electronics
  • Self-clean aftermath — E115 can appear during or after a self-clean cycle if the temperature regulation fails

Troubleshooting steps you can try

  1. Turn off the oven — cancel any running cycle and turn the oven off at the control panel.
  2. Let it cool — do not attempt to open a locked oven door. Wait at least 30–60 minutes for the cavity to cool below the lock threshold.
  3. Cut power if needed — if the oven elements remain on despite pressing Cancel, turn off the oven’s circuit breaker.
  4. After cooling — power on and check if E115 clears. If it does, the overheat may have been a one-time event from a self-clean cycle.

When to call a technician

E115 is a serious safety code. If it appears during normal baking (not self-clean), the temperature regulation system has failed and must be diagnosed before using the oven again. A stuck relay is particularly dangerous because the elements will heat uncontrollably. A technician will test the sensor, relays, and cooling fan. Do not use the oven until it’s been inspected. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
