Oven temperature sensor open circuit — sensor disconnected or failed

What E012 means on your Bosch range

Error code E012 indicates an open circuit in the oven temperature sensor (RTD or NTC probe). The control board continuously reads the sensor’s resistance to regulate oven temperature. When the circuit is broken — due to a failed sensor, broken wire, or loose connector — the board registers infinite resistance and triggers E012, disabling oven heating.

Symptoms

  • The oven won’t heat when a bake or broil cycle is selected
  • E012 appears on the display when attempting to use the oven
  • Surface burners still work normally (they use separate ignition systems)
  • Previous temperature inaccuracies may have occurred before the complete failure

Common causes

  • Failed sensor probe — the platinum RTD element inside the probe breaks from thermal cycling
  • Disconnected sensor plug — the connector at the back wall of the oven cavity works loose from heat expansion and contraction
  • Broken sensor wire — the wire passing through the oven wall to the control board breaks at a stress point

Troubleshooting steps you can try

  1. Locate the sensor — in most Bosch ovens, the temperature sensor is a thin metal probe mounted at the top rear of the oven cavity, held by one or two screws.
  2. Check the connection — if accessible, verify the sensor plug behind the oven is firmly seated. Pull it out and push it back in.
  3. Power reset — if the connector is loose, a reset after reseating may clear the code.

When to call a technician

If reseating the connector doesn’t help, the sensor needs replacement. The sensor itself is inexpensive (a modest cost–a modest cost) and accessible from inside the oven. A technician will verify by measuring resistance across the sensor terminals (typically 1,000–1,100 ohms at room temperature for RTD sensors). Codes may vary by model generation and series.
