Gas valve fault — gas supply not activating for oven burner

What E013 means on your Bosch range

Error code E013 indicates a fault in the oven gas valve circuit. The control board attempted to open the gas valve for the oven burner but detected a problem — either the valve didn’t open, the safety circuit prevented activation, or the igniter didn’t reach the temperature required to open the safety valve. On Bosch gas ranges, the oven igniter must glow hot enough (typically drawing 3.2–3.6 amps) before the gas valve opens.

Symptoms

  • The oven won’t heat but surface burners work normally
  • You may see the igniter glow dimly but no gas ignition
  • E013 appears when Bake or Broil is selected
  • A faint gas smell may be noticeable if the igniter is weak (opens the valve partially)

Common causes

  • Weak oven igniter — the most common cause. The igniter glows but doesn’t draw enough current to open the gas safety valve. This is a wear item that degrades gradually.
  • Failed gas valve solenoid — the electromagnetic coil in the valve fails, preventing it from opening
  • Wiring issue — the connection between the igniter, valve, and board is interrupted
  • Gas supply issue — the manual shut-off valve for the range is partially closed

Troubleshooting steps you can try

  1. Check the gas supply — verify the manual shut-off valve behind the range is fully open.
  2. Observe the igniter — turn on the oven and watch the igniter through the oven window (bottom of cavity for bake, top for broil). If it glows orange but gas doesn’t ignite within 60 seconds, the igniter is weak.
  3. Do NOT try to light the oven manually — never use a match or lighter to ignite an oven with an electronic ignition system.

When to call a technician

E013 most commonly requires igniter replacement. The oven igniter is located inside the oven cavity, mounted near the burner tube. A technician will measure the igniter’s current draw to confirm it’s below the valve’s activation threshold. If the igniter draws adequate current but the valve still doesn’t open, the valve needs replacement. Gas valve work should always be done by a certified technician. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
