Compressor fault — compressor not starting or overheating

What E5 means on your Bosch wine cooler

Error code E5 is a critical compressor fault. The control board has detected that the compressor is not running as expected — either it won’t start, shuts off immediately after starting, or is overheating. Since the compressor is the heart of the cooling system, E5 means the wine cooler cannot maintain temperature in either zone.

Symptoms

  • Both zones warming up — no cooling at all
  • The compressor makes a clicking sound every few minutes (trying to start and failing)
  • Complete silence from the compressor area
  • E5 on the display, both zone temperatures rising

Common causes

  • Failed start relay — the relay that provides the initial surge of current to start the compressor fails, preventing startup. Most common E5 cause and the cheapest fix.
  • Overload protector tripped — the compressor overheated (often due to poor ventilation) and the thermal protector cut power
  • Compressor motor failure — the motor windings fail, requiring compressor replacement
  • Low refrigerant — a refrigerant leak reduces system efficiency until the compressor can’t maintain pressure

Troubleshooting steps you can try

  1. Check ventilation — ensure there’s adequate clearance around the wine cooler (especially at the back and top for built-in models). Blocked ventilation causes compressor overheating.
  2. Power reset — unplug for 10 minutes to let the overload protector reset, then try again.
  3. Listen for startup — after plugging back in, listen for the compressor click and hum. A click without a sustained hum indicates a start relay or compressor issue.

When to call a technician

E5 requires professional diagnosis. A technician will test the start relay first (often a a modest cost–a modest cost fix), then the compressor windings and refrigerant pressure. If the compressor has failed, the repair involves pulling the unit out, brazing new refrigerant lines, and recharging the system — this is the most expensive wine cooler repair. For older units, replacement may be more cost-effective than compressor repair. While waiting for service, move wines to a cool, dark area. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
