What E61 means on your Bosch dryer
Error code E61 indicates that the drum drive belt has broken. Bosch dryers equipped with a belt continuity switch detect when the belt is no longer intact and trigger E61 to prevent the motor from running without a load (which can cause overheating) and to alert you that the drum won’t tumble.
Symptoms
- The drum doesn’t turn at all but you may hear the motor humming
- E61 appears immediately when starting a cycle
- The dryer may have made a thumping sound before the belt broke
Common causes
- Belt wear — the belt wears thin from thousands of cycles of friction against the drum and pulleys, eventually snapping
- Seized idler pulley — a locked pulley puts excessive tension on the belt, accelerating wear
- Drum bearing failure — worn drum bearings or glides increase friction, overloading the belt
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Confirm the diagnosis — try spinning the drum by hand through the door opening. If it spins very freely with no resistance, the belt has broken (normally you’d feel motor resistance).
When to call a technician
Belt replacement requires opening the dryer cabinet and lifting or removing the drum to route the new belt around it. A good technician will also replace the idler pulley and inspect the drum glides while the drum is out — these are wear items that often fail around the same time. The belt itself is an inexpensive part (a modest cost–a modest cost). Codes may vary by model generation and series.
