What E50 means on your Bosch dryer
Error code E50 indicates that the drum motor is not reaching or maintaining the target speed. The control board monitors motor RPM through a tachometer and triggers E50 when the speed falls below the acceptable range. This differs from E08 (motor won’t start at all) — E50 means the motor runs but can’t maintain proper speed.
Symptoms
- The drum turns slowly or intermittently
- A squealing, grinding, or labored sound from the motor
- E50 appears after the drum has been running for a few minutes
- The motor may work initially but slow down as it heats up
Common causes
- Worn drive belt — a stretched or glazed belt slips on the motor pulley, reducing drum speed
- Seized idler pulley — the tensioner pulley bearing seizes, creating excessive friction on the belt
- Motor bearing wear — the motor shaft bearings drag as they wear out, slowing rotation
- Overloaded drum — an extremely heavy load exceeds the motor’s torque capacity
- Failing motor capacitor — the run capacitor degrades, reducing the motor’s running torque
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Reduce the load — remove items to test with a small, lightweight load.
- Listen to the motor — a squealing sound points to the belt or idler; a humming or grinding sound points to the motor bearings.
- Power reset — unplug for 60 seconds.
When to call a technician
A technician will inspect the belt, idler pulley, and motor. Belt and idler replacement is a moderate repair that requires drum removal. Motor or capacitor replacement is more involved. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
