What E1 means on your Bosch wine cooler
Error code E1 indicates a fault with the upper temperature zone sensor. Bosch dual-zone wine coolers have independent sensors for the upper and lower compartments. The upper zone sensor monitors the temperature for white wines or lighter reds (typically set to 45–55°F). When this sensor fails or sends out-of-range readings, E1 appears and the upper zone’s temperature regulation becomes unreliable.
Symptoms
- E1 displayed on the control panel
- The upper zone temperature drifts from the set point
- The compressor runs continuously or not at all for the upper zone
- Lower zone continues to function normally
Common causes
- NTC sensor failure — the thermistor fails electrically, producing an open or short circuit
- Loose sensor connector — vibration from the compressor can loosen the plug-in connection
- Wire damage — the sensor wire can be pinched by shelf hardware or damaged by ice buildup
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Power reset — unplug the wine cooler for 60 seconds. After a power outage, sensor readings can be temporarily disrupted.
- Monitor after reset — wait 24 hours to see if the temperature stabilizes and E1 doesn’t return.
- Check wine temperature — use a wine thermometer to verify whether the actual temperature matches the display reading.
When to call a technician
If E1 returns after reset, the sensor needs replacement. The upper sensor is typically mounted inside the upper compartment behind a small cover. A technician will test resistance (should read approximately 10k ohms at room temperature) and replace if out of spec. Wine coolers are sensitive to temperature fluctuations — prolonged operation with a faulty sensor can expose wines to damaging temperature swings. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
