What E57 means on your Bosch washer
Error code E57 appears on Bosch washers equipped with brushless direct-drive or inverter motors. It indicates that the inverter module — which converts DC power to the variable-frequency AC that drives the motor — has detected a fault. This could be an overcurrent condition, a communication error with the main board, or an internal component failure in the inverter itself.
Symptoms
- The drum won’t spin in any cycle
- E57 appears when the motor should engage
- The washer may fill and drain normally but can’t agitate or spin
- A clicking sound from the inverter module at the back of the machine
Common causes
- Inverter module failure — the power transistors (IGBTs) in the inverter burn out from overcurrent or power surge
- Motor position sensor fault — the hall-effect sensors in the brushless motor send incorrect position data
- Communication failure — the data link between the inverter and main control board is interrupted
- Overloaded drum — persistent overloading stresses the inverter beyond its thermal limits
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Reduce the load — remove items and try a small, balanced load.
- Power reset — unplug for 5 minutes to allow the inverter’s thermal protection to reset.
- Check connections — if you’re comfortable, verify the multi-pin connector between the motor and inverter is firmly seated at the back of the machine.
When to call a technician
E57 requires professional diagnosis. A technician will test the inverter module, motor position sensors, and the communication bus between boards. Inverter replacement is expensive but is a more targeted fix than replacing the entire main board. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
