What E02 means on your Bosch washer
Error code E02 indicates that the washing machine’s heating element circuit has a fault. The control board monitors water temperature during the wash cycle and triggers E02 when the water doesn’t reach the programmed temperature within the expected time. This affects wash cycles that require heated water — typically 40°C (104°F) and above.
Symptoms
- Hot wash cycles produce cold or lukewarm water
- Clothes aren’t as clean on hot cycles as they used to be
- E02 appears during the heating phase of the cycle
- Cold wash cycles (20–30°C) work normally
Common causes
- Burned-out heating element — the immersion heater element develops a break in its resistance wire from thermal cycling and mineral buildup
- Failed NTC temperature sensor — the sensor reports incorrect temperature, preventing the board from activating the heater
- Scale buildup on element — in hard-water areas, calcium scale insulates the element, reducing heat transfer until it overheats and fails
- Control board relay failure — the relay powering the heater fails
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Use cold cycles — as a temporary workaround, cold wash programs will still function. Modern detergents work effectively at 20–30°C.
- Power reset — unplug for 60 seconds. A relay can sometimes get stuck and a reset clears it.
- Descale the machine — run a hot empty cycle with a washing machine descaler. If the element is partially scaled but not yet failed, this may restore some function.
When to call a technician
E02 typically requires heater element replacement. The element is located at the bottom of the drum, accessible from the rear or front panel. A technician will test heater resistance (typically 20–30 ohms) and the NTC sensor. This is a common repair that takes about 45 minutes. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
