Understanding error code E05.

Heating element fault — heater circuit interrupted or shorted

What E05 means on your Bosch dryer

Error code E05 signals that the heating element circuit has failed. The control board has detected either an open circuit (the element is burned out) or an overcurrent condition (the element or its wiring has shorted). The dryer will run the drum motor but won’t produce heat, resulting in clothes that never dry.

Symptoms

  • The dryer tumbles but produces no heat at all
  • E05 appears after the heater would normally activate (a few minutes into the cycle)
  • Drying times become extremely long before the code appears

Common causes

  • Burned-out heating element — the resistance wire inside the element breaks from thermal cycling
  • Tripped thermal fuse — a one-time-use fuse that blows when the dryer overheats, usually due to restricted airflow
  • Failed high-limit thermostat — the safety thermostat that cuts heater power if the temperature exceeds the safe limit
  • Restricted airflow — a clogged lint trap, blocked exhaust duct, or crushed vent hose causes overheating that triggers the thermal fuse

Troubleshooting steps you can try

  1. Check the lint trap and vent — clean the lint filter thoroughly. Then disconnect the exhaust duct from the back of the dryer and check for lint buildup inside the duct.
  2. Check external venting — go outside and verify the vent hood flap opens freely and isn’t blocked by lint, debris, or bird nests.
  3. Power reset — some thermal fuses are resettable. Unplug for 5 minutes and try again.

When to call a technician

If vent cleaning doesn’t resolve E05, the heating element or thermal fuse needs replacement. A technician will test continuity on the element, thermal fuse, and high-limit thermostat. Important: if the thermal fuse has blown, the root cause (usually restricted airflow) must also be addressed, or the new fuse will blow again. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
