What E04 means on your Bosch refrigerator
Error code E04 indicates that the condenser fan — located near the compressor at the back or bottom of the refrigerator — is not running or not reaching the expected speed. The condenser fan pulls air across the condenser coils to dissipate heat from the refrigerant. Without this airflow, the compressor overheats and the refrigerator loses cooling efficiency.
Symptoms
- The refrigerator runs warm — both compartments gradually rise in temperature
- The compressor runs but feels hot to the touch
- No fan noise from the back or bottom of the unit
- The compressor may cycle on and off more frequently as it overheats
Common causes
- Fan motor failure — the motor burns out from dust contamination or bearing wear
- Blocked fan blade — debris, a fallen item, or ice prevents the blade from spinning
- Dust-clogged condenser coils — heavy dust buildup restricts airflow enough to cause the fan to stall under load
- Wiring fault — the connector between the fan and the main board fails
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Clean the condenser coils — unplug the refrigerator, remove the base grille or rear panel, and vacuum the coils and fan area. Pet hair and household dust are the most common causes of condenser area problems.
- Check for obstructions — look for anything physically blocking the fan blade.
- Power reset — unplug for 5 minutes to reset the overheating protection and let the compressor cool.
When to call a technician
If the fan doesn’t spin after cleaning and resetting, the motor needs replacement. The condenser fan is accessible from the rear of the unit. A technician can swap it in 20–30 minutes. This repair is moderately urgent — without the condenser fan, the compressor works harder and its lifespan is shortened. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
