What E03 means on your Bosch refrigerator
Error code E03 indicates a fault with the evaporator temperature sensor — the sensor mounted directly on or near the evaporator coils inside the freezer. This sensor plays a critical role in the defrost cycle by telling the control board when the evaporator has warmed enough for ice to melt. It also helps regulate compressor cycling to prevent the evaporator from getting too cold or too warm.
Symptoms
- Frost builds up rapidly on the back wall of the freezer
- The defrost cycle runs too long or not at all
- Freezer temperature fluctuates more than normal
- Compressor runs more frequently than usual
Common causes
- Sensor failure — the thermistor fails from repeated thermal cycling between sub-zero and defrost temperatures
- Ice encasement — the sensor gets encased in ice from a previous defrost failure, causing it to read incorrectly
- Wire damage from ice — ice expansion near the evaporator can pinch or sever sensor wires
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Manual defrost — unplug the refrigerator for 6–8 hours with doors open. This melts any ice trapping the sensor and may restore normal readings.
- Power reset — after defrosting, plug back in and monitor for 24 hours.
- Check for rapid frost return — if frost reappears on the evaporator within 24–48 hours, the defrost system has failed.
When to call a technician
E03 requires accessing the evaporator behind the freezer rear panel. A technician will test the sensor, defrost heater, and defrost thermostat as a system — these components often fail together. The sensor itself is inexpensive but access requires removing shelves, the ice maker (if present), and the evaporator cover. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
