What E02 means on your Bosch refrigerator
Error code E02 signals a failure in the freezer compartment temperature sensor. This NTC thermistor monitors the freezer’s internal temperature and reports to the control board, which uses this data to manage compressor and defrost cycles. When the sensor fails or loses connection, the board cannot maintain the target freezer temperature — typically 0°F (-18°C).
Symptoms
- E02 displayed on the control panel
- Freezer temperature rises above 0°F, causing food to thaw
- Excessive frost buildup if the compressor runs non-stop due to missing sensor input
- Ice cream softens or frozen items develop ice crystals (indicating thaw-refreeze cycles)
Common causes
- Failed NTC sensor — the thermistor fails electrically, typically open-circuit
- Ice damage to wiring — frost buildup during defrost failures can encase and eventually damage the sensor wire
- Connector corrosion — moisture from the defrost cycle corrodes the plug connection over time
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Power reset — unplug for 60 seconds, then monitor for 24 hours.
- Check for ice buildup — if the freezer walls have heavy frost, a defrost issue may have damaged the sensor. Let the unit defrost manually (door open, unplugged, 4–6 hours) and restart.
- Use a standalone thermometer — place one in the freezer to verify whether actual temperature is stable despite the code.
When to call a technician
E02 requires the same diagnostic and repair approach as E01, but for the freezer sensor. The sensor is typically behind the rear panel inside the freezer compartment. Replacement is straightforward but requires removing shelves and the evaporator cover. A faulty freezer sensor is more urgent than a fresh-food sensor because uncontrolled freezer temperature can lead to food safety issues and compressor overwork. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
