What E08 means on your Bosch dryer
Error code E08 indicates a drive motor failure. The control board attempted to start the drum motor but didn’t receive a running signal within the expected time. The motor may have failed entirely, may be unable to start due to a seized bearing, or the motor start circuit may have a fault.
Symptoms
- The dryer makes no sound when Start is pressed
- You may hear a click or brief hum followed by silence
- E08 appears within seconds of attempting to start
- The dryer may have been making unusual noises before failing entirely
Common causes
- Failed motor — the motor windings burn out from age or overheating due to lint buildup
- Seized motor bearing — the shaft bearing locks up, preventing rotation
- Motor start capacitor failure — the capacitor that gives the motor an initial boost of current fails
- Broken belt — on models with a belt detection switch, a broken drum belt triggers E08 because the motor load profile differs from expected
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Try spinning the drum — reach in and try to turn the drum by hand. If it won’t budge, the motor or bearing may be seized.
- Check for overheating — if the dryer was running when it stopped, let it cool for 30 minutes. A thermal overload protector on the motor may have tripped.
- Power reset — unplug for 60 seconds.
When to call a technician
E08 requires professional diagnosis and repair. A technician will test the motor, capacitor, and belt switch. Motor replacement is a significant repair involving drum removal. If the motor is original and the dryer is older than 10 years, discuss repair vs. replacement cost with your technician. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
