What E34 means on your Bosch washer
Error code E34 is specifically a timeout error for the door lock — the lock mechanism attempted to engage but didn’t complete within the allowed time. This is distinct from E16 (lock not detected) in that E34 indicates the lock motor or solenoid started but couldn’t finish the locking action.
Symptoms
- You can hear the lock mechanism attempting to engage but it cycles without completing
- The door feels closed but the washer won’t accept a Start command
- E34 appears after a brief delay following the door closure
Common causes
- Aging lock solenoid — the solenoid or bimetal switch inside the lock weakens with age and can’t generate enough force to complete the lock motion
- Corroded lock mechanism — moisture and detergent residue corrode the internal moving parts
- Wiring degradation — intermittent contact in the wiring harness provides inconsistent power to the lock
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Power reset — unplug for 60 seconds. The lock can jam in a partial state after a power interruption.
- Clean the lock area — use a damp cloth to remove detergent buildup from the door strike and lock opening.
- Close firmly — give the door an extra firm push when closing. If the lock engages, the strike may need adjustment.
When to call a technician
E34 typically requires lock assembly replacement. The lock is a self-contained unit mounted behind the front panel. A technician can swap it in 20–30 minutes. The washer is safe to leave with E34 — it simply won’t start. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
