What E16 means on your Bosch washer
Error code E16 indicates that the door lock mechanism has failed to engage or the control board cannot detect that the door is securely locked. Bosch front-load washers require a positive lock signal before allowing any cycle to begin — this prevents the door from opening when the drum is full of water.
Symptoms
- The washer won’t start — pressing Start has no effect
- The door lock doesn’t make its usual clicking sound when closing
- E16 appears immediately on the display
- The door may feel like it’s closing but not latching firmly
Common causes
- Worn door strike — the plastic hook on the door that engages the lock mechanism wears down over time
- Failed door lock actuator — the electromechanical lock assembly has a solenoid that pulls the locking pin; when it fails, the door can’t lock
- Misaligned door hinge — a sagging door doesn’t align the strike with the lock body
- Wiring issue — the connector between the lock and the main board is loose or damaged
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Inspect the door strike — look at the plastic hook on the door that enters the lock mechanism. If it’s visibly worn, cracked, or chipped, it needs replacement.
- Clean the lock area — detergent residue can build up around the latch mechanism. Clean with a damp cloth.
- Power reset — unplug for 60 seconds. The lock mechanism can stick after a power interruption and a reset often clears it.
- Check door alignment — close the door slowly and check if the strike enters the lock body cleanly. If the door sags, the hinge screws may need tightening.
When to call a technician
If the lock actuator has failed, it needs replacement. The lock assembly is mounted behind the front panel, held by two screws. A technician will test the lock’s solenoid and the board’s output signal. This is usually a quick, inexpensive repair. The washer is safe to leave idle with E16 — there’s no risk of water damage since the cycle can’t start. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
