What E05 means on your Bosch refrigerator
Error code E05 indicates a fault in the defrost system sensor. This sensor monitors the evaporator temperature during defrost cycles to signal the board when ice has fully melted from the evaporator coils. When this sensor fails, the refrigerator either cannot initiate defrost, cannot determine when defrost is complete, or runs the defrost heater too long.
Symptoms
- Heavy frost or ice buildup on the back wall of the freezer
- Reduced airflow — the freezer feels warmer than usual
- The refrigerator runs louder or more continuously than normal
- Fresh food compartment temperature rises because cold air can’t circulate past the iced evaporator
Common causes
- Defrost sensor failure — the bi-metal thermostat or thermistor on the evaporator fails, preventing accurate temperature readings
- Defrost heater burnout — the glass tube heater under the evaporator breaks, so defrost never completes regardless of sensor status
- Control board defrost circuit — the board’s defrost timer or relay fails, preventing the defrost cycle from initiating
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Manual defrost — unplug the refrigerator, open both doors, and let it thaw completely (4–8 hours). Place towels to catch water. This clears accumulated ice and may temporarily restore function.
- Check evaporator coverage — after defrosting, plug back in and check after 24 hours. If frost returns quickly and covers the evaporator unevenly, the defrost system has failed.
- Listen for the defrost cycle — the compressor should stop every 8–12 hours for a defrost cycle lasting 15–30 minutes. If you never hear this pause, the defrost system isn’t activating.
When to call a technician
E05 requires removing the evaporator cover inside the freezer to access the defrost sensor and heater. A technician will test the sensor’s resistance and the heater’s continuity. Both are relatively inexpensive parts, but accessing them requires careful disassembly. Left unresolved, E05 leads to progressive ice buildup that eventually blocks the evaporator entirely, causing the refrigerator to stop cooling. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
