What E41 means on your Bosch refrigerator
Error code E41 is the door alarm indicator — the refrigerator has detected that a door has been open for longer than the allowed time (usually 2–5 minutes). This is a convenience and food safety feature, not a component failure. However, if E41 triggers repeatedly or immediately after closing the door, it may indicate a door switch or seal problem.
Symptoms
- An audible alarm sounds and E41 appears on the display
- Internal temperature starts rising
- The alarm may trigger even when the door appears closed
- Condensation or frost forms near the door opening
Common causes
- Door left ajar — the door wasn’t fully closed, often due to a protruding item inside
- Worn door seal (gasket) — the magnetic seal doesn’t create a tight closure, allowing warm air in
- Faulty door switch — the switch that detects door position is stuck or broken
- Misaligned door — the door has dropped on its hinges and no longer closes flush
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Close the door firmly — check that no items, containers, or drawers are preventing full closure.
- Test the gasket — close the door on a piece of paper. Pull the paper out — you should feel resistance. If it slides out freely, the seal is weak at that point.
- Clean the gasket — wipe the rubber seal with warm soapy water. Sticky residue or food debris can prevent the magnetic seal from engaging.
- Check door alignment — look at the gap between the door and the cabinet from the front. If it’s uneven, the hinge may need adjustment.
When to call a technician
If the gasket passes the paper test and the door closes firmly but E41 still triggers, the door switch may need replacement. This is a minor repair. If the gasket is worn or deformed, replacement is straightforward but requires ordering the correct part for your model. Persistent E41 should be addressed because a poor door seal causes the compressor to run overtime, increasing energy costs. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
