Understanding error code E025.

Self-clean fault — oven did not reach pyrolytic temperature

What E025 means on your Bosch oven

Error code E025 indicates that the self-clean (pyrolytic) cycle could not complete successfully. The oven must reach approximately 900°F (480°C) to burn food residue to ash. E025 appears when the cavity temperature falls short of this target within the allowed time, when the door lock fails to engage properly, or when a safety component trips during the high-temperature cycle.

Symptoms

  • Self-clean cycle starts but stops partway through
  • The oven cavity is warm but not extremely hot when the error appears
  • Food residue remains inside — the oven interior is not clean
  • The door may remain locked after E025 until the oven cools

Common causes

  • Door lock failure — the lock doesn’t fully engage, and the board aborts self-clean as a safety precaution
  • Weakened heating element — the bake or broil element has degraded and can’t reach pyrolytic temperatures
  • Thermal fuse triggered — the high-temperature safety fuse blows during self-clean
  • Temperature sensor drift — the sensor reads higher than actual temperature, causing the board to think it’s reached target when it hasn’t, then timing out

Troubleshooting steps you can try

  1. Remove heavy soiling first — wipe out large food deposits before running self-clean. Heavy soil produces excessive smoke that can trigger thermal protection.
  2. Check the door seal — inspect the gasket around the oven opening. If it’s loose, torn, or missing, heat escapes and the cavity can’t reach temperature.
  3. Wait and retry — let the oven cool completely (at least 2 hours), then try self-clean again.

When to call a technician

If E025 repeats, a technician will check the door lock, elements, sensor, and thermal fuse. Self-clean is one of the most demanding operations for an oven — it stresses every component. Some technicians advise against frequent self-clean use on older ovens because the extreme temperatures can accelerate component aging. Regular baking functions should still work even with E025. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
