What E17 means on your Bosch washer
Error code E17 signals that the water level inside the drum has exceeded the programmed maximum. The pressure switch detects more water than the selected cycle requires, triggering the control board to stop the inlet valve and initiate drainage. This is a flood prevention measure.
Symptoms
- More water visible in the drum than usual before E17 appears
- The washer stops during the fill phase and begins draining
- Water may leak from the door if the level gets very high
Common causes
- Stuck inlet valve — the solenoid valve fails in the open position, allowing continuous water flow
- Faulty pressure switch — the sensor that measures water level sends incorrect readings, so the board doesn’t stop filling at the right level
- Blocked pressure chamber — the small air chamber and tube that connects to the pressure switch gets clogged with detergent residue, preventing accurate pressure readings
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Cancel and drain — select Drain/Spin to remove excess water immediately.
- Check the drain hose — ensure it has a proper high loop or air gap. Backflow from the standpipe can add water to the drum.
- Reduce detergent — excessive suds can trick the pressure switch into underreading the actual water level.
- Power reset — unplug for 60 seconds to clear a stuck valve solenoid.
When to call a technician
If E17 recurs, the inlet valve or pressure switch needs replacement. A stuck-open inlet valve is a flood risk and should be addressed promptly. A technician will test the valve’s response to the board’s signals and inspect the pressure switch and its air tube. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
