What E21 means on your Bosch refrigerator
Error code E21 indicates that the evaporator fan motor has failed or is not running as expected. The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the evaporator coils throughout the freezer and fresh-food compartments. Without this fan, the compressor may run but cold air won’t reach the storage areas, causing temperatures to rise despite the cooling system working.
Symptoms
- Both compartments warming up despite the compressor running
- No air circulation — you don’t feel cold air blowing when opening the door
- Unusual silence from inside the freezer (normally you hear a faint fan hum)
- Heavy frost on the evaporator while the rest of the freezer warms up
Common causes
- Fan motor burnout — the small DC motor fails from wear or electrical overload
- Ice-locked fan blade — frost buildup around the fan blade prevents it from spinning, eventually burning out the motor
- Wiring or connector failure — the connection between the fan motor and the main board is interrupted
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Listen for the fan — with the freezer door open, press and hold the door switch (the button the door pushes when closed). You should hear the evaporator fan start. Silence confirms a fan issue.
- Manual defrost — if you suspect ice is locking the fan, unplug the unit and defrost for 4–8 hours. After restart, listen for fan operation.
When to call a technician
If defrosting doesn’t restore fan operation, the motor needs replacement. The evaporator fan is located behind the rear panel inside the freezer. A technician removes the panel, disconnects the old motor, and installs a new one — typically a 30–45 minute job. This is a moderately urgent repair because the compressor will run continuously without the fan, increasing energy consumption and accelerating wear. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
