What E19 means on your Bosch dishwasher
Error code E19 signals that the diverter valve — the component that directs water flow between the upper and lower spray arms — is not functioning correctly. Many Bosch dishwashers use a single circulation pump with a diverter valve to alternate water pressure between spray levels. When this valve jams or its motor fails, only one spray arm level receives water, resulting in poor cleaning on the other.
Symptoms
- Dishes on the top rack come out dirty while the bottom rack is clean, or vice versa
- Only one spray arm seems to be working during a cycle
- A clicking or grinding noise from the base during spray arm switching
- E19 may appear intermittently rather than on every cycle
Common causes
- Jammed valve — food debris or mineral buildup blocks the valve from rotating between positions
- Failed valve motor — the small motor that actuates the valve stops working
- Broken valve gears — the plastic gears inside the valve assembly strip or crack
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Clean the sump and filters thoroughly — debris in the sump area can reach the diverter valve. Remove and clean all filter components.
- Run a vinegar cycle — mineral deposits on the valve can cause sticking. Run an empty cycle with white vinegar.
- Power reset — turn off for 60 seconds. The valve may need to re-home to its default position.

If E19 persists, the diverter valve assembly likely needs replacement. It’s located in the sump area and requires partial disassembly of the base. A technician can test the valve motor and manually check valve movement. This repair typically takes 45–60 minutes. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
