What E230 means on your Bosch oven
Error code E230 indicates that the cooling fan (also called the tangential fan or ventilation fan) is not operating. This fan is different from the convection fan — it blows air across the outside of the oven cavity to keep the control electronics, door surface, and surrounding cabinetry cool during and after cooking. It typically starts during preheating and continues running for 15–30 minutes after the oven is turned off.
Symptoms
- The oven control panel gets unusually hot during use
- Surrounding cabinetry or countertops feel excessively warm
- The oven door glass is hotter than normal to touch
- E230 appears on the display
- No fan sound from behind or above the oven during cooking
Common causes
- Cooling fan motor failure — the motor burns out from heat exposure and continuous use
- Fan blade obstruction — debris or a shifted component blocks the blade
- Wiring failure — the connection between the fan and board is interrupted
- Thermal cutout triggered — some models have a thermal fuse in the fan circuit that can blow
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Listen for the fan — start the oven and after a few minutes, listen for airflow from the vent above or below the oven door. Silence confirms a fan issue.
- Let it cool completely — if the fan stopped mid-cycle due to overheating, let the oven cool for 2 hours and try again.
- Power reset — turn off the breaker for 60 seconds.
When to call a technician
The cooling fan is accessible from behind the oven (requiring the unit to be pulled from its cutout for built-in models). A technician will test the motor and any thermal fuses in the circuit. Continuing to use the oven without the cooling fan risks overheating the control electronics and can damage surrounding cabinetry. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
