NTC temperature sensor fault — incorrect temperature readings

What E02 means on your Bosch dishwasher

Error code E02 signals that the NTC temperature sensor is sending readings outside the expected range. The control board relies on this sensor to regulate water temperature during wash and rinse cycles. When the sensor’s resistance value falls outside the acceptable window — either open circuit (infinite resistance) or short circuit (near zero resistance) — the board triggers E02 and may abort the cycle.

Symptoms

  • Error appears shortly after starting a wash cycle
  • The dishwasher stops mid-cycle and drains
  • Water temperature seems erratic — cycles may run too hot or too cold before the error triggers
  • Previous E01 errors may have preceded E02 if the sensor was degrading gradually

Common causes

  • NTC sensor failure — the thermistor develops a crack or internal break, causing an open or short circuit
  • Corroded sensor connectors — moisture infiltration at the plug-in connection between the sensor and wiring harness
  • Wiring damage — heat exposure or vibration can break solder joints or fray wires running from the sensor to the main board

Troubleshooting steps you can try

  1. Power reset — disconnect from power for 60 seconds. A transient sensor spike can produce a false E02.
  2. Check for recent work — if the dishwasher was recently serviced or moved, a disconnected sensor plug is the most likely cause.
  3. Run a diagnostic cycle — on many Bosch models, pressing Start + Delay Start together for 3 seconds enters diagnostic mode. This can help confirm whether the sensor is the issue.

When to call a technician

E02 almost always requires sensor replacement. The NTC sensor is a low-cost part (typically a modest cost–a modest cost) but is located inside the sump assembly, requiring removal of the lower spray arm and filter assembly to access. A technician will verify the sensor’s resistance with a multimeter before replacing it. If the sensor tests normal, the issue may be in the wiring harness or control board. Continuing to run the dishwasher with E02 active can result in overheating or under-heating, both of which affect wash quality and energy efficiency. Codes may vary by model generation and series.
